Luke 11:1-4

Contents

Luke 11:1-4.  Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”

Introduction

Only one thing that disciples asked Jesus to teach them: on prayer. By answering this question, we understand prayer is comething to be learned. Below are few reasons:

  1. Concept: Biblical prayer is distintcly different from the secular concept of prayer

    1. Prayer is not chage the will of God; but align ours with His.

"I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God. It changes me." — C.S. Lewis

    2. Prayer is not to meet my needs, but to meet the needs of others and ultimatly of the Lord
    3. Prayer is not characterised by set time, set place, set posture, or set words

  2. Prime: Biblical prayer is the highest occupation for a human being

"Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work." Oswald Chambers (1874–1917)

    1. Prayer needs practice: needs learning
    2. Prayer deserves priority: needs to give up something to find time for prayer
    3. Prayer requires preparation: needs homework while meeting the Lord

  3. Pradox: Biblical prayer has several paradoxes to be considered

    1. Simple but complex:
    2. Easy but difficult:
    3. Short but long:

  4. Measure: Biblical prayer is the measure of a persons's spirituality

    1. Test of faith:
    2. Test of humility:
    3. Test of love:

Disciples Prayer

  1. Our Father in heaven: Father shows relationship while in heaven shows separation
  2. Hallowed be Your name: God's name is to be respected on the earth
  3. Your kingdom come: Lord is accepted in kings who rules our life; and his kingdom is established now and ever
  4. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven: How angels obey God, so should the people: you and me
  5. Give us day by day our daily bread: Needs of the community; and bread for today and promise for tomorrow
  6. And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us: Lord is the one who forgices and its basis is the work on the cross. Shows our understanding of our forgiveness.
  7. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one: Evil exist, our flesh and our will power is so weak; we need divine providance.
