§189. Jesus Reveals Details of the Kingdom Plan
(Luke 17:20-37)

Introduction

1. Healing of the ten lepers and only one of them returned to show the gratitude. He was a Samaritain. Interestingly, he understood the significance of the miracle of Jesus, that it points to his deity.

Exposition

17:20.

Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation;

1. Jews had no doubt about their entry to the Kingdom since they observe the laws. Their only doubt is when it will come.

2. Jesus answer showed that it is not by observation indicating that it is not by sight but faith.

3. Whey they belive that Jesus is the Messiah, the King, then the kingdom has arrived.

17:21.

nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”

1. His kingdom is first spiritul and then only it has physical dimension. That is they have to first accept Jesus as the King, the promised Messiah.

17:22.

Then He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

1. Jesus gives a warning to the disciple that he will depart. This period is the church age.

2. The term the days of the Son of Man indicates a day of judgement.

17:23.

And they will say to you, ‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them.

1. Jesus further warn about various kinds of deception for many false messiah's will come and deceive people.

17:24.

For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day.

1. However, the Lord will come back. While the first coming of Jesus was obscure, his second coming will be conspocous; for the whole world will know it; so glorious it will be.

2. The term the days of the Son of Man appers again here indicates the judgement at the time of his second coming.

17:25.

But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

1. Before the glory, there will be suffering. This is something the Jews are not able to digest.

17:26.

And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:

1. Parallelism between Noah, Lot, and days of Son of Man indicates the day of judgement.

2. Ony Eight people were saved during Noah's time though there were millions on the earth. Only few belived in the warning given by God. So will be the case at the second coming of Christ.

   Gen. 6:3. And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

   1 Pet. 3:20. who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

   Heb. 11:7. By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

17:27.

They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

1. They ignored the warning; and lived for presemt while Noah and family served the Lord on this earth and build the ark.

17:28.

Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;

1. Sodom was like Lot, barring the absence of marriage, probably they did not believed in marriage.

2. Every day life responsibilites are not evil in itself, but they have potential distractions from the necessity of one’s fundamental orientation toward the purpose of God.

17:29.

but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.

1. Lot, though reluctantly, left Sodom. So is also believers should leave this world behind.

17:30.

Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

1. Son of Man is now not revealed; his glory veiled. He will be revealed with his full glory and men will find it difficult to face him.

17:31.

“In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back.

1. Lord's coming is unpredictable. He can come anytime.

17:32.

Remember Lot’s wife.

1. Her looking back reveals her heart. Take the warning light.

   Gen. 19:14. So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking

   Gen. 19:17. So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed” Gen. 19:26. But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt

17:33.

Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.

17:34.

I tell you, in that night there will be two men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left.

17:35.

Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left.

17:36.

Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”

17:37.

And they answered and said to Him, “Where, Lord?”

17:.	So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

Application

1. Take warnings seriously.

2. Have ternity in perspective.

3. Let not dends of this world shoul NOT chock the Word.
